US Government Suffers Security Breach

Category: Data security | 06 January, 2011

A Christmas greeting pretending to be from The White House caused a data security breach at the US government. The greeting was an e-card claiming to be from the Executive Office of the US President and sent out just before Christmas that encouraged government staff to click on a link.

However the link contained a variant of ZeuS Trojan malware which breached US government data security and stole a ream of documents and log-in codes. According to security analyst Brian Krebs, the malware was inadvertently downloaded by government workers at the Massachusetts State Police, the National Science Foundation's Office of Cyber Infrastructure and the Financial Action Task Force, amongst others.

Recently Graham Cluley a senior technology consultant at Sophos said that if the UK government failed to adequately protect its data the result could be incredibly damaging.
Mr Cluley said that all businesses, but governments in particular, need to thoroughly encrypt data so that even if it is stolen it is useless to hackers.
